Short Film Research: Proximity
"Proximity" is a short film directed by Ryan Connolly and produced by Triune Films. The film falls into the action genre.
Common Sound in the action genre: Sound is a crucial element in any film, and the action genre is no exception. Action films often use fast-paced, intense music and sound effects to match the high-energy action on screen. In "Proximity," the sound design is used to great effect, with the use of suspenseful music and sound effects adding to the tension of the film's action sequences.
Common Mis-En-Scene in the action genre: Lighting, Action, Makeup, Performance, and Setting. These elements can all contribute to the overall look and feel of a film and can be used to help define a genre. In the action genre, these elements are often used to create a sense of excitement and intensity. In "Proximity," the costumes and production design are dirt and rugged, adding to the film's wretched aesthetic. The action sequences are well choreographed and filmed, with the use of tracking shots which follow the protagonist and close-up shots adding to the sense of immediacy.
Common Editing in the action genre: Editing refers to the process of selecting and arranging footage to create a finished film. In the action genre, editors often use quick cuts and fast-paced editing to create a sense of intensity and keep the action moving at a fast pace. In "Proximity," the editing is used to great effect, with the use of quick cuts and fast-paced action helping to build tension and keep the audience on the edge of their seats.
Example action films: There are many great action films out there, and it would be impossible to list them all here. Some examples of action films include
"Black Adam” (2022)
"Top Gun: Maverick” (2022)
"Avatar: The Way of Water" (2022)
Elements of the action genre that I like: Some elements that are commonly associated with the action genre that I find appealing include fast-paced action sequences, intense music, sound effects, and high-stakes storylines. The short film “Proximity” also has intense hand-to-hand combat scenes that look realistic. I hope to incorporate a fight scene into our film somehow even though it would be hard.
Elements of the action genre that do not appeal to me: I believe the constant action and noise overwhelming can be annoying if done incorrectly. Sometimes being too loud drowns out the actual dialogue of the film. There can also be too many action scenes and not enough character development which stops the audience from getting a connection to any of the characters.
