Short Film Research: Ballistic

 "Ballistic" is a short film directed by Aryan Nava and written by Nava and Jason K. Allen. It tells the story of a hitman named Jack who is struggling with his conscience as he prepares to carry out a hit on a target.


Common Sound in the action genre: Sounds are used in action films to help create a sense of excitement, tension, and drama. They can also help to immerse the audience in the action and make the events on screen feel more realistic and impactful. In “Ballistic,” music is used in scenes to create a sense of excitement and drama. It can range from fast-paced electronic or rock music to more epic, orchestral scores.


Common Mis-En-Scene in the action genre: Mis-En-Scene is used in the action genre to help create a visually compelling and immersive viewing experience for the audience. It can help to establish the setting and atmosphere of the film, as well as help to convey the characters and their personalities. “Ballistic” often feature costumes that are designed to be functional and practical, as well as stylish. These costumes can help to establish the characters' personalities and professions, as well as help to create a sense of visual interest.


Common Editing in the action genre: Editing is used in the action genre to help create a visually compelling and immersive viewing experience for the audience. It can help to convey the fast-paced and energetic nature of the action, as well as create a sense of tension, drama, and impact. Jump cuts involve cutting between shots that are taken from the same angle, but at different points in time. In “Ballistic”,  these types of cuts were used to create a sense of disorientation or to convey a sense of time passing quickly.

Elements of the action genre that appeal to me: Action films often feature physical conflict between the characters, whether it be hand-to-hand combat or battles with weapons. This physical conflict is often used to create a sense of danger and tension for the characters and the audience. The short film "Ballistic" featured numerous battles with weapons that appeared realistic.


Elements of the action genre that do not appeal to me: Lack of character development is an element that is unappealing to me as some action films may focus heavily on the action and neglect character development. This can make it difficult for the audience to connect with or care about the characters.

A soccer showdown

   Today was our second day of filming on October 6th, 2021. Our group was excited to finish our Adidas commercial. Jade Walrave and I changed into our costumes before heading to our filming set. The track, our filming set, was not very busy so we began finding an area with good lighting to film our final scenes. The final scenes we needed to film was the action scene where Jade and I were in a head to head match. We first began by filming a low angle of me and jade running in order to show off the adidas brand cleats. After this we filmed a few of my shoes alone in order to get the perfect shot. Between filming each scene we would go back and review the scene in order to change anything wrong in it. We ended up re-filming the first scene around 5 times before capturing the correct shot. Production Blog: Extra Details

  Making my film takes a lot of planning and attention to detail. With a schedule of two shooting days, there is a lot of work to do to make sure everything runs smoothly. Here are some of the extra details I had to consider when planning my five-minute film. After I identified the specific locations I will be filming at, including both interior and exterior scenes I still had to work out the details. I first had to e nsure that I have permission to film at each location and was in compliance with any local regulations. Next, I must c onsider the time of day I will be shooting each scene and plan accordingly. Make sure I have all the necessary equipment, including cameras, lighting, and sound equipment. Identify all the participants in my film and make sure they are available on the scheduled shooting days. Establish health and safety protocols to keep everyone on set safe and healthy.   For my commercial assignment, I decided to pair with Jade Walrave, Ely Silverberg, and Mya Hauser.  For this commercial, I wanted to choose some of my peers with who I knew I was comfortable working with and filming with. I met Ely and Mya last year during my general paper class and we often worked on many group projects together. We always would finish our projects on time and we worked great together as a team. `I also met Jade last year during AICE Testing and she sat in front of me. We ended up becoming friends and hanging out the whole summer. After reviewing our schedules we discovered we had AICE Media together. I knew we would work well together as we already got along with each other outside of school. Together our group will function well because each member has their own specialty and skill set.
